Ole Kirk Christiansen, who began manufacturing wooden toys, ironing boards, and stepladders in his Billund, Denmark workshop, likely did not think of the fact that his colourful bricks, that he built at his own workshop, would later become the most loved toy manufacturer in the world.
However, he and his son Godtfred were able to rescue victory from the clutches of disaster by adopting Lego in a different direction.
Ole Kirk Christiansen
Ole Kirk Christiansen is a Danish carpenter who grew up in a small village on the countryside. He made his love for whittling, into one of the world's most loved toys. The toys for construction, also known as LEGO bricks in 130 countries around the world are loved by kids as well as adults.
In 1924, the woodworking workshop was destroyed completely by fire. The fire was caused by Ole's two sons who had ignited the fire with shavings of wood. Ole rebuilt his business despite the loss of wood. He soon started selling wooden toys.
During the yo-yo craze in the thirties, the factory produced so many unsellable yo-yos that the business was close to going bankrupt. Vejle Bank provided a loan which was repaid and Ole was able to rebuild the factory. Leg Godt, which is Danish for "play well" was renamed to reflect the new direction taken by the company.
Godtfred Christiansen
Godtfred Kirk Christiansen died in his home town of Billund, Denmark. He had built up his father's business of making wooden toys into an international empire. He was 75.
After a fire destroyed the family's wood toy warehouse, Godtfred decided the company should focus on plastic toys. His brothers, Karl and Gerhardt--who had been the directors of plastic and wood product manufacturing respectively--disagreed.
While on a ferry ride the London toy fair in London, Godtfred had a conversation with a buyer who opined that instead of creating singular toys, the makers of toys must develop a system which sets of toys are interlocked. This led to the invention of the current Lego design with tubes and studs, which was patented on 28th January 1958.
The Kiddicraft Brick
In the late 1940s, a firm named Kiddicraft came out with the "Kiddicraft Self-Locking Building Bricks". The blocks were hollow rectangular with four studs at the top. Each stud was inserted into blocks' studs, allowing them to be stacked firmly.
Kirk Christiansen, Godtfred and Godtfred, a British supplier for the first machine for injection molding were shown these bricks by a salesman in order to show the kinds of toys they could create. It doesn't matter if Kirk was aware that the bricks were patent-pending or not, he copied them and dubbed them Lego. It was the beginning of a market for toys that is still worth billions of dollars today. Hilary Fisher Page committed suicide in the year 1957, as she was the creator of Kiddicraft.
The machine for plastic injection molding
Lego bricks are one of the most loved toys around the globe. Their popularity is due to the fact that they are safe for children, durable and flexible. Kids have built everything from spaceships and cities using these blocks.
Godtfred's idea for the stud-and-tube system came from an encounter with a toy buyer. The buyer suggested that the toy makers should create a system in which sets of toys are interrelated and can be used to construct various kinds of structures. This was the reason for the creation of the Lego system. In 1971, sets containing furniture and dollhouses were launched. The company also expanded its transport options by introducing ships and boats with hulls that floated.
The Town Plan
In the 1980s Lego established a new benchmark with its Technic series that included precise mechanical parts. Then, nine years later, the company introduced its smiling yellow Minifigures which now appear in its play sets with themes. The same year Lego introduced Duplo, an assortment of larger blocks for kids that cannot easily manage the smaller original bricks.
Lego has developed into a worldwide toy empire that includes 10 theme parks and film franchises. It is also a brand which has a loyal customer base despite this expansion. Lego is known by its faithful customers because it feels more like a family member rather than a business.
The Ninjago theme
While Lego is most famous for its plastic construction toys however, it is more than an toy. In 1998 Lego was named Toy of the Century. It beat out teddy-bears and Barbie. The company has a huge media empire, including books, TV shows as well as theme parks.
The company also offers a line called Mindstorms of programmable robotics that has helped shape its educational strategy. The underlying theory of education that is influenced by Seymour Papert's constructionism, is that children learn best when they build things.
The Ninjago theme has become a major focus at Lego fan conventions and the movie has led to the creation of massive collaborative sets. The style of the original collection, Ninjago City 70620, has also inspired the design of other LEGO themes.
